Memories of Nations – Architectural and Social Heritage of Cooperatives
The region stretching across the state border has a rich and eventful history, filled with fascinating yet often little-known details. Among these, the story of cooperatives stands out — institutions that had a significant impact on local farmers on both sides of the border throughout the 20th century.
Implemented under the Interreg ROHU Programme, the Memories of Nations (MoN) project aims to explore and present this diverse and captivating architectural and social heritage. The National Archives of Hungary serves as the lead partner, while the Satu Mare County Museum (Muzeul Județean Satu Mare) acts as the project partner.
The project focuses on forms of community self-organization before 1945, with special attention to agricultural cooperatives such as the Hangya Cooperative. Nearly 800,000 archival documents will be digitized, while the remaining—or in some cases, vanished—architectural heritage of former cooperatives will be showcased through conferences and exhibitions In addition, a special exhibition will be organized in Adyfalva (Ady Endre), Romania, presenting the everyday life of a historical peasant household. An interactive map will also be created, involving local communities through participatory research methods to preserve and share collective memories.
Through the Memories of Nations (MoN) project, the National Archives of Hungary participates in the Interreg VI-A Romania–Hungary Programme, supported by the European Union. This programme fosters cross-border cooperation between Romania and Hungary, involving four counties in each country: Arad, Bihor, Satu Mare, and Timiș in Romania; and Békés, Csongrád-Csanád, Hajdú-Bihar, and Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg in Hungary.
The programme is financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), with co-financing from both Romania and Hungary. The total project budget amounts to €1,050,858, of which €840,686.40 is funded by the ERDF.
